Relationships with each: Marcus was always second best. He was never good enough in his father's eyes (nor necessarily except as a spare). And Marcus was never able to crack into his father's inner circle, and frankly, by a young age, simply stopped trying. He wasn't the sort to knock himself out seeking approval.

He got on decently enough with his brother. They fought when they were young, tolerated each other as they grew older. When both Gus and Julius died in the war, Marcus mourned them, but in the end, he never really missed them.

When he was a child, after Gus finally went off to Hogwarts, Marcus became closest to Cordelia. Overshadowed by his brother, the few years Marcus had at home alone were the very few where he remembers enjoying his family life. He grew close to his mother for a time, willing to endure whatever hobby was required of him to gain some parental approval. Even at that young age he realized he had no hope of gaining his father's eye, so he sought Cordelia's instead. Thus, he learned to sew a perfect seam, to knit, and how to garden (eventually gaining him excellent marks in Herbology his first year of Hogwarts until he realized that that deviated from his image of stupidity and he promptly refused to do homework so that his marks would fall back into line with the rest). He knew how to run a household, and at the tender age of 9, the house elves saw nothing wrong in coming to him if Cordelia were busy, seeking orders for dinner, or advice on household spells.

Marcus was born on September 3, 1974, trailing his elder brother Augustus by just over two years (Gus, born in May of 1972, entered Hogwarts in 1983 and completed his education in 1990, before the Boy Wonder entered the school). That set the stage for his entire life. He was always second to Gus, he was always the eldest in his classes. He was always bigger than the rest (including his brother's more petite frame), often mistaken for being seven when he was just four, or expected to be a teenager when he was just entering Hogwarts. It left Marcus spending most of his life with people expecting more of him than he was ready to give, and eventually him being tagged as stupid because he simply wasn't as old as he appeared. And once he accepted the label, he never saw any reason to rise above it. After all, he found a comfortable niche and made himself at home. At least that particular niche belonged to him and never suited Gus.

Marcus wasn't, unlike his reputation, a complete idiot. Aside from the brief excursion into Herbology, he hid these skills from his mates when he arrived at Hogwarts (save the knack with the house elves; he befriended the ones in Hogwarts and ordered them about just so in order to get proper snacks between meals, or any time he liked). He was sorted into Slytherin as he'd expected (as his mother, father, and brother all had been before him). And he settled in at Hogwarts, not expecting to rule the roost, but not wanting to fade into the background either.

Being larger than the rest of the class set him in another natural niche, that of the bully. He left his housemates alone, but members of other houses were natural targets for his snark, and once he started playing Quidditch in his second year, for his physical game. People might not have thought he was smart, but they quickly learned to stay out of his way, for Marcus wasn't averse to using his hands to get what he wanted. And he seemed to almost take a fierce joy in it as well.

Quidditch turned out to be the one place he truly felt at home. For one thing, Gus couldn't fly well enough to save his own arse, and Marcus could. He was tall but quick, and turned out to be an excellent Chaser. Not only could he maneuver on a dime, but he had no problems going straight through the folks on the other team in order to get what he wanted. And as far as he was concerned, once Quidditch started, everything was for the good of the team. He made captain in his sixth year (Potter's first year). Unfortunately, he gave so much attention to Quidditch that year that he failed his classes during seventh year, and was forced to repeat it all over again. However, as he was still the best on the pitch, he retained his captaincy through his second seventh year.

Once he left Hogwarts, Marcus joined the Tutshill Tornadoes. He wasn't considered the brightest bulb in the drawer, but he was physical, he was fast, and he could memorize Quidditch plays like no one's business. And he had a gift for seeing just the right spot to insert himself to break up an opposing team's play, which was what had made him a good captain for Slytherin. That and not being afraid to get his hands a bit dirty to win a game. And for the three years, it seemed like this was a brilliant plan. He gained a berth on the Tutshill Tornadoes and after the first year made it to first string. But in the summer of 1997, when Dumbledore died, Marcus couldn't ignore the fact any longer that he had to do something different.

Marcus had been aware for years that not only was his father a blood purist (he'd been brought up the same), but his father was a follower of Voldemort. In July of 1997, Gus showed up on Marcus' doorstep to recruit Marc to the cause. Marcus refused to take the Dark Mark, but he did agree to work for the cause and left his position with the Tornadoes and entered a job with the Hit Wizards. He acted as an insider for a time, not because he believed in Voldemort himself but because he was protecting his family. But he also settled into the job at the same time, finding a new niche where his size and his brutish temper fit in, bad cop usually partnered with a good cop.

When the war ended, however, both his father and brother were dead, and Cordelia Flint was alone in their home in Knaresborough. Cordelia insisted that as the last of their line of Flints that Marcus must marry, and arranged a contract with Anabelle Pucey (b. 1979). The problem was, Marcus wasn't interested in women at all, let alone marriage (and the fathering of heirs). Marcus had realized long ago that sex was about men, love was a load of crap, and he wasn't sure he was going to be able to manage to father anything. He'd promptly withdrawn from the idea of relationships at that point, occasionally going out to scratch the physical itch in places where no one would remember him. But the marriage to Anabelle, in January of 1999, brought to mind the one fancy he'd had during his Hogwarts years, for his housemate Adrian. She didn't look exactly like him. Nor talk like him. Nor behave in any way like him. But she was a Pucey, and if he closed his eyes and squinted he could make out that she might be something reminiscent of the fancy he'd once had, and he managed to consummate the marriage. But he never did manage the heir.

Marcus' life settled into something of a pattern, then. He lived in Knaresborough with his wife, his mother, and a slew of house elves, on the well protected Flint lands. He took the floo into the Ministry to do his work for the DMLE, which he frankly enjoyed the physical nature of. Most nights he went home, but some he went out and he turned a blind eye if Anabelle wished to do the same, under the strict restriction that he would not become parent to a bastard. And Marcus discovered that while he would never desire his wife, and would likely never love her, he did indeed like her, and they became friends.

And then abruptly things changed. The Summer of Rage was a difficult one for the Flints, and Marcus shored up the wards on his lands as best he could to protect Anabelle and his mother. But he spent most of his time working with the Hit Wizards to try to control the riots and away from the house, unaware of the work Anabelle and Cordelia did to continue to ward the Flint lands and to bring in supplies so they could withstand any possible invasion.

Those wards turned out to be a lifesaver for the Flint lands. Anabelle and Cordelia had spent a good deal of work to ward the lands against those of anything but pure blood. And after the explosion at Hogwarts, when Wild Magic roamed the land, the wards became unbreakable, tuned purely to those who were Flint by blood. Marcus assumes the wards are for Flint by blood and marriage, but as Anabelle left (January 2008) to find supplies shortly before Wild Magic rolled through and has not returned, he has not tested this. It has not actually occurred to him to ask if Cordelia can cross the barrier (she cannot, and is effectively a prisoner in her own home).

When refugees began gathering in York, Marcus refused to leave his home. After all, it was only twenty miles away and that was a swift broom ride. And he had many brooms in storage, from his years testing new brooms while flying for the Tornadoes. But after a few problems with magical changes, he realized he needed a backup form of transportation, and he… acquired… a Muggle motorcycle. While he is still very anti-Muggle in terms of blood, as he has slowly become accustomed to technology he became enamoured of that form of transportation and decided to claim one as his own. He has carefully hoarded plastic cans of petrol, and at roughly 50 mpg, he's not going through it too quickly, and he's got about 5 five gallon cans full at the moment, which is enough for a month or two, maybe more if he only uses the bike to go back and forth to York.

Marcus has no desire to open his lands to Muggles, but would offer a safe haven for wizarding folk… if he could bring them onto the lands. It doesn't suit for storage as it is 20 miles away from the center of population. So while it is safe, it is also useless. And comes with an irritable elder Cordelia Flint who remains locked upon the grounds.
