History
Jocelyn Rose Doherty was born to Michael and Imogen Doherty on December 20, 1977, in Speke, Liverpool. Michael was a Muggle auto mechanic and Imogen was a Muggleborn witch who worked as a secretary. Jocelyn, quickly shortened to "Joss" by her father, was an impetuous, happy, somewhat gangly child. For a long time, she held the opinion that her father could fix anything. Later this was downgraded to 'he can fix anything that's mechanical' after she asked him to fix an injured bird she'd found.
The summer after Joss turned eleven, she received an invitation to Hogwarts. This wasn't much of a surprise: Imogen had told Michael a little about the Wizarding world when they'd gotten engaged and he'd taken the news surprisingly well.
Upon her arrival at Hogwarts, Joss was sorted into Hufflepuff. She liked her Housemates and her classes, and she really liked watching Quidditch matches. She tried out for the team in second year and became a Chaser. She loved flying and she loved the adrenaline rush she got when playing. And a lot of the Quidditch players - male and female - were easy on the eyes.
In April of Joss's second year, her younger sister Madeline was born. The new edition to the Doherty household had been rather unexpected, but was very much welcomed. Joss doted on her little sister and spent as much time with her as she could during hols and in the summer.
Along with most of the rest of Hufflepuff, Joss cheered Cedric Diggory during the Triwizard Tournament. His death hit her pretty hard - he had been Quidditch captain and they were the same age. She didn't try out for the Quidditch team when her seventh year came. That year was worse than the one before it. Umbridge was pain in the arse, but Joss managed to stay out her direct anger.
After leaving school, Joss spent a few months spending most of her time with Maddie, whether it was reading to her, telling her about school, or playing absolutely anything the six-year-old wanted to play. Shortly before Dumbledore's murder, Joss began Ambulator training - she figured if she liked it, she might go in for Mediwitch training later. Once the second war started, she found that her job was more difficult than she'd expected because of the new Ministry. She almost lost her job at one point for getting into a fight with another Ambulator over his penchant for over using the word 'Mudblood.' She's a bit surprised she didn't get herself landed in Azkaban for it.
After the war, Joss stayed in the Ambulance Corps. She saved most of her wizarding pay - Maddie was starting to show signs of magic, and Joss wanted to do what she could to help her sister out with school. Michael and Imogen were killed in a car crash in 2000 and Joss moved with Maddie closer to London. Maddie would be starting school soon, and being closer to Diagon and the train station would save money. Joss took a few odd jobs to supplement her income and put back as much as she could during the parts of the year Maddie was away at school. She had a few relationships that lasted awhile, but Joss tended to keep things casual with whatever man or woman she got involved with - Maddie didn't need any extra change in her life, and Joss didn't want to feel more like a parent than she already did on occasion. Maddie landed in Hufflepuff and tried out for Quidditch a few times, though she never quite made the cut; she did get good marks in school, though.
Then the Summer of Rage hit. Joss was glad her mum wasn't around to have to deal with it, but she had to deal with trying to patch up rioters, even ones she'd rather had given a good thrashing to herself. And then the bloody charm bomb went of and everything really went south. When reports of monsters and also sort of weird things happening in London started coming out, Joss to decided getting away was the best thing to do. Thankfully, Maddie agreed. They packed up what they could - Maddie had three bags, one charmed, which was great, and Joss had two (most things that weren't clothes went into the charmed bag) - and started out on the road. Joss filled up the tank of her car and strapped their bicycles to it and off they went. As they went, they heard that a lot of people were gravitating to York. The car ran out of petrol before York and the luggae went from four bags and a charmed one to the charmed bag and two over stuffed ones. Eventually, they managed to find Outer York and set up house. Both signed up for the militia and Joss slipped back into being an Ambulator.
