Personal Life

Personality: After re-focusing her life, Hestia is now strong-minded and occasionally hard-headed. She is quick to say what she thinks, regardless of how proper that may be. She has trouble containing her emotions and occasionally has bursts of explosive anger. This is all because of her resolve to speak for herself and live her life to the fullest.

Hestia is not easily intimidated, which can often lead her to trouble. She is quick to hide her fear, jumping into new situations in an effort to conquer them. Life with Alistair was almost too comfortable, and now she is determined to live differently than she did before.

Appearance: Hestia looks like Mary Louise Parker. Hestia is 5’8”, with nice curves. She has wavy brown hair (though occasionally, it takes on a bit of a reddish tint after exposure to sun) which she usually wears down about an inch or two past her shoulders. Her eyes are a light brown.

For work, Hestia dresses in the professional wear that is slightly expected of the English bureaucracy. Outside of work, however, she dresses in casual clothes that are tailored to show off her best assets and features. She is often seen in jeans a lower-cut shirt, though is just as often known to wear a casual dress. Hestia tries to dress appropriately for the occasion, equally likely to wear heels as sneakers. She is more of a “bag hag” than a “shoe whore”. She treasures the gold locket given to her by her father before he passed away, wearing it almost everywhere.

History

After graduating Hogwarts with her fellow Ravenclaws in June 1983, Hestia knew she wanted to be an Auror. At the time, it felt as though the Department was mostly male and would not accept a woman in her ranks, but Hestia was determined to change that. She took all of the ribbing in stride and persevered on through training, proving that she could hold her own and be one of the boys, so to speak.

It was after one particularly grueling night when Hestia met Alistair. She had gone to a pub after a trying day and was sipping on a pint of mead when he approached her. She had not been in the mood for flirtations and petty exchanges, but there was something about him which she quickly warmed to. He offered to buy her another drink; when she accepted, he then offered to take her to dinner the following night. She graciously declined, as she had all of her suitors up to thos point. She was too focused on her career, she said, for the distraction of dating. Perhaps after training, however, she would consider his offer.

She would not see Alistair again until 1990. It was at the same bar (these things do, after all, tend to occur in the usual places) after another surprising day. She was embarrassed when she could not recognize him at first as he obviously remembered her. When she would recall the day later, she would wonder if she had only accepted his offer for dinner the next night because he caught her off-guard.

The pair married in 1992. Per Alistair’s request, it was a small, intimate wedding. Hestia, who was 26 at the time, had not let go of her fantasies of a grand occasion surrounded by friends and family. But she knew that he was a more private person and that in marriage, one had to make the occasional sacrifice. He certainly understood her less-than-original career choice, accepting that she would not want children for quite some time. He was more interested in her, he said. Recalling this remark would make her blush several years down the road—later, she would realize how stupid she must have been.

Work had become far more challenging for Hestia with the rise of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. She began to throw herself further into work, glad to have Alistair to take care of her and make sure she wasn’t overdoing it. She often asked he resented her for seeming to choose her career over their family. He reassured her that these were difficult times requiring her to make an intense sacrifice. He knew it would not always be like this. She smiled, convinced she had made the right choice.

When she met Harry Potter in 1995, she began to wonder what it would be like to have a child. These feelings arose again two years later, when she saw how horribly Petunia and Vernon Dursley had done with their Dudley. They were feelings she had never considered before, but she was now 33, and she realized that her time was perhaps running short. So many deaths and injuries made her realize she needed to reprioritize.
After the war, Hestia began to cut back on hours. There was less for her to do anyway, she reasoned, and Alistair had been so patient. She began to express her desire for a child. He was reluctant—they had a good thing going, he said, and he wasn’t sure he would make a good father. She laughed at that concern, goading him constantly. He relented, and they decided to try for a baby.

Two years later and Hestia had not gotten pregnant. With the advice of a friend, she went to a Muggle doctor to determine whether something was wrong with her. The doctor grinned when he gave her the results; she was perfectly healthy and vital, with eggs still left to go. She relayed the news to Alistair, who looked a bit downtrodden.

After the divorce, she would wonder if he had always known. If that had been the reason for his “patience” and “denial.” At the time, though, she could tell he was broken and simply told him that he was wonderful to her, child or not. They could always adopt, she had reasoned, though she knew that she would never.

So it was Hestia and Alistair for some time. And it was comfortable. Sure, they had the problems of any married couple; occasional bickering about annoying habits, issues in communication, different careers. But the world was better now, and she was certainly happier.

It was February 2003 when Hestia discovered a lump in her breast. Unsure of what to do and too embarrassed by the abnormality to see a Healer, she returned to the same Muggle doctor. He did not grin when he came back with the chart. Breast cancer. She could die, the doctor said, if serious actions were not taken.

Hestia would say later that the possibility of one’s life ending motivates an incredible change in perspective. She realized that she did not love Alistair anymore. That all of his concessions and patience made him have seemingly no personality. While he was charming, that was the extent of his depth. She needed somebody who was exciting and vital as she faced the threat of death. There was no more passion in their marriage. She knew that a child would have saved all that; he would have been a terrific father, and she would have stayed with him because of that. But now, she wanted somebody who she felt more strongly about to hold her hand. She liked Alistair. She no longer loved him.

The cancer had not spread too far from the one breast. Reasoning that it could always be magically grown back, Hestia opted for a mastectomy. It was terrifying. She had never had a Muggle surgery done and was unsure what to think. She did not want Alistair to come with her.

The surgery was effective at removing the cancer, but even the knowledge that she would likely live a full life could not change her feelings. She presented Alistair with divorce papers in August 2004. He was blindsided. She told him he could keep the house. She would not make him pay alimony (though she hid it from him, her salary had always been greater anyway). She simply needed a change. A friend from school lived in York, she told him. She planned to leave London.

When Hestia arrived to Inner York in late 2004, she was charmed by the city. She continued as an Auror, working out of York rather than London. She purchased a flat in the city, integrating herself with the mundane community. There were few wizards in York at the time. During the war, most preferred to be closer to London, where they would be close to Ministry protection. She was glad to start unrecognized, with little baggage behind her.

Hestia currently serves as a Advisor to the Civil Defence Committee in Inner York. Hestia most often serves a liaison between the magical and mundane worlds, trying to protect the “homeland security” of Inner York. She tries to provide a magical perspective and coordinate defense efforts to adequately help citizens. She started the position once wild magic started to become a concern. Hestia drew from her background as an Auror and rose to the challenge of protecting York’s magical and mundane (who she felt quite the kinship with after spending so much time in the city) from forces that had been unknown at that time. Her tenacity and resolve garnered respect from many a citizen, and the mundane began to rely on her as a sort of authority.
